CASE STUDY: DEDUSTING SYSTEM FROM LIMEKILN EXHAUSTING GASES IN A PULP ANDPAPER INDUSTRY USING A FLOODED DISKVENTURI SCRUBBER

ABSTRACTThis article presents a technical solution to reduce dustemissions from lime kiln exhausting gases in a pulp and paperindustry, aiming to decrease environmental impacts. Theseemissions are regulated at the federal level by Brazil’s NationalEnvironmental Council (CONAMA), through Resolution 436of 2011, and by state environmental entities, for which saidemissions must not exceed 180mg/scm. In the cases studied, theamount of flue gas particulate material emitted from the limekiln after primary treatment was 700mg/scm, well above thevalue permitted by law. Several technologies relate equipmentand systems to the solid-gas separation processes in the gaseousemission sources. Each one of them has its own advantages andapplications. In analyzing different dedusting mechanisms, themain and most common unit operations are the electrostaticprecipitator and the Venturi scrubber. In this context, theflooded disk Venturi scrubber was the option chosen for thesolid-gas separation process, given its implementation costs,dedusting efficiency and operability of the system. E-mail: [email protected] assembled in 2 lime kilns at the same pulp mill (1040ADTPD, air-dried ton per day), where the maximum dry basisconcentration obtained was 59.49 (lime kiln A) and 31.04 (limekiln B) mg/scm at 8% O2. These results show that the systemchosen is an effective solution, staying at least 66% below thelimit of CONAMA Resolution 436/11.Keywords: Gaseous emissions, lime kiln, pulp and paper,venturi scrubber, environmental legislation.
