Valmet to supply flue-gas plant to Tampereen power plant in Finland
Valmet will supply flue-gas cleaning and condensation plant to Tampereen Energiantuotanto Oy’s Naistenlahti power plant in Finland. The investment will increase the plant’s energy efficiency and district heating production capacity, as well as decrease the plant’s emissions.
The order is included in Valmet’s fourth quarter 2014 orders received. The value of the order is around EUR 8 million. The plant will be ready for use in the fall of 2015.
The Naistenlahti 2 power plant provides district heat for the residents of Tampere, Pirkkala and Ylöjärvi and generates electricity for the national grid by mainly using wood and peat as fuel. The plant’s heat output is 120 MW and electrical output 60 MW.

Waste heat utilized in district heating
Valmet’s delivery includes a multi-stage scrubber system and related process equipment and facilities. Valmet’s experience in flue gas cleaning technology extends all the way back to the 1970s and the company has supplied similar technology to Tampereen Energiantuotanto before, for instance for the Hervanta woodchip heating plant and Tammervoima’s combined heat and power (CHP) plant.
The investment will decrease the power plant’s flue gas sulfur and dust emissions as specified in the new EU directive on industrial emissions (IED) that will come into force on January 1, 2016. The plant’s total energy efficiency and production capacity will increase significantly; heat that was earlier released into the atmosphere with flue gases can now be utilized as district heating.
“We are delighted that Valmet’s tender as a whole was the most financially advantageous and we could make an agreement about the delivery. Valmet is our long-term partner and a local Finnish supplier. Our cooperation also supports the regional economy,” says Antti-Jussi Halminen, Managing Director from Tampereen Energiantuotanto.
“Our customers’ goal is to improve the efficiency of their power plants, and the flue gas heat recovery technology will help to achieve this goal. At the same time, we are supplying them with solutions for reducing emissions. We are pleased to be carrying out this project in Tampere and thus continuing our good co-operation with our local power plant customers. Valmet also supplies complete flue gas cleaning solutions to Hervanta and Tarastenjärvi plants in Tampere,” says Risto Hämäläinen, Director, Environmental Systems from Valmet.
Valmet has solutions for both wet and dry flue gas cleaning, heat recovery, flue gas desulfurization and NOx reduction.
